Monday, 30 November 2020 22:58 368

Sukhum. November 26. Apsnypress. November 26 is a Constitution Day of the Republic of Abkhazia. The Constitution of the sovereign, democratic, legal state of the Republic of Abkhazia was adopted by the Supreme Council on November 26, 1994. On the same day, the deputies of the highest legislative body of Abkhazia elected the First President - Vladislav Ardzinba, who was previously the chairman of the country's Supreme Council.

The Constitution of Abkhazia was adopted in difficult conditions of post-war life, when the circle of economic blockade was tightened around the republic, and it was experiencing serious political pressure from the international community.

The Constitution enshrines the integrity and inalienability of the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia; the division of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of state power; human rights and freedoms.

The overwhelming majority of Abkhaz citizens approved the first article of the country's basic law on October 3, 1999, at a people’s referendum. It states that "The Republic of Abkhazia (Apsny) is a sovereign, democratic, rule of law state, historically established by the people's right to free self-determination."

The Parliament adopted the Act of State Independence of the Republic of Abkhazia on the basis of the referendum results on October 12, 1999.

Constitution Day is a holiday, non-working day in Abkhazia.
