MFA OF ABKHAZIA: THE PAST MEETING OF THE OSCE PERMANENT COUNCIL BECAME ONE OF THE MOST POLITICIZED EVENTS OF THIS ORGANIZATION

Friday, 20 November 2020 14:43 494

Sukhum. November 16, 2020. Apsnypress. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia commented on the past meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council.

The commentary notes:

"The past meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna became one of the most politicized events of this authoritative international organization.

Certain OSCE representatives, considering the" situation in Georgia "and the" occupied regions ", continued to hang labels on the Republic of Abkhazia and create a false image of the work of the Geneva International Discussions and the positions of their participants.  In the course of the meeting, the British representative also distinguished himself by repeating the traditional accusations against Abkhazia and extremely distorted presentation of the problems of the Geneva discussions.

In this regard, special attention should be paid to the persistent desire of Georgia's friends in the OSCE to replace discussion of substantive work within the framework of the Geneva Discussions by putting forward absurd demands against Russia. At the same time, representatives of Western countries do not know about the existence of the people of the Republic of Abkhazia, which in 2008 could become the next victim of the Georgian military adventure after the people of South Ossetia bark. They also have no desire to accept the fact that it is the Republic of Abkhazia that is a party to the conflict with Georgia and it is with it the existing contradictions must be resolved.

Instead of gradually moving forward along the path of ensuring the security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which is fully consistent with the agenda of the Geneva discussions, these states are trying to make Russia a party to the conflict and force it to implement some kind of "ceasefire agreement", according to which Russia supposedly should "withdraw its troops from Georgia".

Meanwhile, it is well known that the Russian Federation, in pursuance of the 5th clause of the “Six principles of settlement”, agreed upon by the Presidents of the Russian Federation and France on August 12, 2008, in the same 2008 withdrew its troops from Georgia. The deployment of Russian military and border contingents in Abkhazia, as well as in South Ossetia, was carried out after the recognition of the independence of the republics, on the basis of bilateral agreements between Moscow and Sukhum and Tskhinval, which corresponds to the norms and principles of international law. This very circumstance refutes the assertions of Georgia and its partners about the "occupation of Georgian territories" and makes the attempts to present Russia as a party to the conflict absurd.

It is necessary to be aware that such attempts to substitute concepts and shift emphasis in the work of the Geneva Discussions only undermine the effectiveness of this international forum and reduce the willingness of the parties to achieve the expected result.

The Republic of Abkhazia calls on the Co-Chairs and participants of the International Geneva Discussions to focus on the implementation of the key provision of the agenda - discussing ways to ensure durable security for Abkhazia by concluding a document on the non-use of force between the Republic of Abkhazia and Georgia.
