THERE WAS HELD A MEETING WITH THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE GENEVA DISCUSSIONS AT THE MFA OF ABKHAZIA

Thursday, 30 September 2021 08:14 305

Sukhum. September 21, 2021. Apsnypress. Deputy Foreign Minister Irakli Tuzhba met with the co-chairs of the Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia - EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar, UN Representative Cihan Sultanoglu and Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in the South Caucasus Annika Söder, on September 21.

As the RA MFA reports, the topic of the meeting was the discussion of the agenda of the upcoming 54th round of the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in the Transcaucasus.

Greeting the delegation, Irakli Tuzhba stressed that the key issue for the Abkhaz side was and remains the issue of agreeing and further signing a document on international guarantees on the non-use of force by Georgia.

He noted that despite the lack of any progress on key political issues, the Abkhaz side still attaches particular importance to the Geneva format, since this is the only internationally recognized negotiation process where the delegation of the Republic of Abkhazia has the opportunity to participate on an equal basis with the largest countries and international organizations and bring their position on certain issues to representatives of international community.

Irakli Tuzhba expressed serious concern about the ongoing process of militarization of Georgia and the building up of its military potential. He called on international mediators to pay attention to this problem and take the necessary measures to prevent an escalation of tension in the region.

Irakli Tuzhba announced the readiness of the Abkhaz side for a constructive dialogue on issues of humanitarian nature.

During the meeting, the co-chairs drew attention to the importance of resuming the work of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) as an effective tool in the work of the Geneva Discussions.

The meeting participants discussed a number of issues related to the epidemiological situation in the republic, and expressed the need to discuss measures to combat COVID 19 with the involvement of experts as part of the negotiation process.

A number of other issues on the agenda were also discussed.

The next 54th round of the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia is scheduled for October 12-13, 2021.
