29 YEARS SINCE THE DAY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE WAR OF THE PEOPLE OF ABKHAZIA OF 1992-1993

Sukhum. August 14, 2021. Apsnypress. Abkhazia marks the 29th anniversary of the War of the people of Abkhazia of 1992-1993.

The war began on August 14, 1992, it lasted 413 days and ended with the victory of Abkhazia.

The official reason for the transfer of Georgian troops was the statement of the State Council that Georgian Interior Minister Roman Gventsadze and twelve hostages taken by the Zviadists were in Abkhazia. The Tbilisi authorities also spoke about the need to "guard the railroad", which in fact resulted an armed aggression against Abkhazia. The Supreme Council of Abkhazia regarded the actions of the State Council of Georgia as "a prepared occupation of the territory of sovereign Abkhazia."

Annually on August 14, the Republic celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of the Fatherland.

Representatives of the leadership of Abkhazia, war veterans, mothers of fallen heroes, public, youth, children lay flowers at the Memorial of Glory.

Volunteers from the North Caucasus, South of Russia, other Russian regions, representatives of the Abkhaz diaspora from far abroad fought for the independence of Abkhazia along with its people.

According to the data given by Colonel Valiko Pachulia, Candidate of Historical Sciences (20.11.1945 - 20.04.2021) in the preface to the book “Combat actions in the Georgian-Abkhazian war (1992-1993) documents and materials ”, “In general, 18,150 people took part in the Georgian-Abkhaz war from the Abkhaz side. Of these: direct participants in hostilities - 13 970 people, employees of the rear services - 4 180 people.

The number of volunteers is 2 310 people.

The number of those who fought in different fronts:

 The Gumista front - 12,520 people.

• The Eastern Front - 5,630 people.

• The Gagra front - 1,600 people, (the front operated for only 1.5 months)

Wounded - 7 thousand people.

Losses - up to 2 thousand people. "
