Sunday, 29 November 2020 15:38 467

Sukhum. November 25, 2020. Apsnypress. President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania met with the co-chairs of the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia - UN Representative Cihan Sultanoglu, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar and OSCE Special Representative for the South Caucasus Rudolf Mikhalka.

They discussed the agenda of the next round of the Geneva Discussions, scheduled for December 10-11 during the meeting.

Opening the meeting, President noted the importance of holding the Geneva Discussions and expressed the hope that they would be decision-making that would benefit not only Abkhazia, but the entire Caucasus. “I hope that the upcoming round of discussions will be useful and productive,” he said.

For his part, Toivo Klaar thanked the President for the meeting: “I am very glad that we have the opportunity to discuss the agenda of the upcoming round of Geneva discussions,” he said.

“We should all have one common goal - no war and the peace. We want our opponents in Geneva to understand this, and we count on your support. Let's see what happens tomorrow, ” said Bzhania.

After the meeting with Aslan Bzhania, the co-chairs of the Geneva Discussions commented on its results to journalists.

Toivo Klaar noted:

“We arrived in Abkhazia as part of the preparatory events for the upcoming round of Geneva discussions. We had a good, fruitful discussion today. We discussed the situation in the region, talked about the coronavirus pandemic, and we hope that eventually the round will take place on time, ” said Toivo Klaar, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus.

He also noted that all the participants in the Geneva Discussions have a desire to meet and discuss many issues. According to him, the Geneva Discussions are a vivid example of how coexisting conflicts should be resolved.

When asked by a journalist about the possibility of resuming meetings under the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM), UN Co-Chair Cihan Sultanoglu noted: “Of course, IPRM is a very important mechanism, and as a component of the International Geneva Discussions is of great importance. In fact, this is the only opportunity to bring together representatives of the parties responsible for security issues in one place to discuss the situation and prevent possible incidents. Meetings in the IPRM format have not been held for more than two and a half years, but we hope to resume them as soon as possible. "

According to the OSCE Special Representative for the South Caucasus Rudolf Mikhalka, the participants of the Geneva Discussions have something to discuss, since the meetings have not been held for almost a year. “I think that this is more than enough and during this time the participants have had a huge number of thoughts and ideas that they can express, as well as rethink the existing facts,” he said.
