Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree recognizing the independence and state sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia 13 years ago


Sukhum. August 26, 2021. Apsnypress. Today is the 13th anniversary of Russia's recognition of independence and state sovereignty of Abkhazia.

On August 26, 2008, by decree of President Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian Federation officially recognized the Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia. International Recognition of Independence Day is a holiday in Abkhazia. Festive events are held throughout the republic every year. This year there are no celebrations due to coronavirus pandemic.

Medvedev stressed: “I signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation considering the free expression of the will of the Ossetian and Abkhazian peoples, guided by provisions of the UN Charter, the 1970 Declaration on the Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations between States, the 1975 Helsinki Final Act of the CSCE, and other fundamental international documents ”.

Tens of thousands of Abkhaz residents came to Freedom Square in the center of Sukhum, congratulating each other and celebrating this significant event after Medvedev's appeal was shown on federal channels in Russia. President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh addressed the audience.

On September 9, 2008, the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Abkhazia was announced in Moscow. On September 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Sukhum on an official visit. The issue of establishing Russian embassies in Abkhazia and Abkhazian in Russia was resolved during the visit. On September 17, 2008, a framework “Agreement on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia” was signed in Moscow.

Following Russia, other countries recognized Abkhazia as well. On September 5, 2008, the Republic of Nicaragua became the second country to recognize Abkhazia. A year later, on September 10, 2009, Abkhazia was officially recognized by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on December 15, 2009 by the Republic of Nauru, on May 23, 2011 by the Republic of Vanuatu, and on September 18, 2011 by the Republic of Tuvalu. On May 29, 2018, the independence of Abkhazia was recognized by the Syrian Arab Republic.
