RA MFA: GEORGIAN DRAFT RESOLUTION "ON DEOCCUPATION AND PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF THE RUSSIAN-GEORGIAN CONFLICT" IS DETACHED FROM REALITY AND DISTORTS THE CAUSES OF ABKHAZIAN-GEORGIAN CONTRADICTIONS

Sukhum. August 3, 2021. Apsnypress. According to Georgian media, there was discussed a draft resolution on de-occupation and peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict in the committee on legal issues of the Georgian parliament on August 2 this year. The document condemns "the occupation of the regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and Tskhinval region, which is carried out by Russia", as well as the steps taken by the Russian Federation to annex these territories. The Georgian authorities call on the Russian Federation "to de-occupy Abkhazia and the Tskhinval region, to abolish the illegal recognition of independence, to end ethnic violence and to constructively participate in the Geneva International Discussions."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia considers the draft resolution "on de-occupation and peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict" as completely detached from reality and distorting the causes of the Abkhazian-Georgian contradictions.

“It is obvious that the Georgian draft resolution contains a direct substitution of concepts for any unbiased observer familiar with the political situation in the South Caucasus,” the RA Foreign Ministry says.

The efforts of the Georgian authorities to present the Abkhaz-Georgian conflict as "Russian-Georgian" have no justification, in fact they are only attempts to evade responsibility by removing the burden of their crimes, the Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia considers.

The RA Foreign Ministry reminds the Georgian side that all responsibility for unleashing the war in Abkhazia in 1992 rests with Georgia, just like for the tragic events of 2008 in South Ossetia.

“One could also recall the numerous armed provocations of the Georgian authorities in Abkhazia in the period from 1993 to 2008, when there were held peace negotiations to resolve the conflict with mediation of Russia and the UN. We should not forget about the numerous cases of ethnic violence during the period of the Georgian occupation of the republic. Clarification of all these facts makes Georgia's attempts to present Russia as a certain participant in the conflict absurd, while completely keeping silent about the role of Tbilisi in the conflict and the crimes of the Georgian side in Abkhazia, ” the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry says in a commentary.

Georgia's claims to Russia to abolish the recognition of Abkhazia's independence and its "de-occupation" are also untenable.

“The decision on recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia and establishment of diplomatic relations complies with international law and does not affect the interests of other participants in international communication,” the RA MFA clarifies.

As for the Geneva discussions, all their participants expect from the representatives of Georgia constructive participation.

“The Georgian side should show political will and reconsider its unconstructive position, instead of discussing meaningless resolutions in parliament. The Georgian authorities are only evading a genuine solution to the problem ignoring the political realities in the region and constantly shifting the responsibility", the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry says.

Abkhazia calls on international mediators in the Geneva discussions to recognize the actions of the Georgian authorities in 1992-199 and 2008 as criminal, to promote the signing of an agreement on the non-use of force between the Republic of Abkhazia and Georgia and to promote an equal interstate dialogue between Sukhum and Tbilisi in order to ensure long-term peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
