REPRESENTATIVES OF ABKHAZIA TAKE PART IN PRESIDENT'S ELECTION OF SYRIA AS OBSERVERS

Sukhum. May 26, 2021. Apsnypress. President's elections of the Syrian Arab Republic are taking place on May 26. Representatives from Abkhazia, Russia, South Ossetia, China, Iran, Iraq and Belarus take part in the elections as international observers.

The observers from the Republic of Abkhazia are Ambassador of the Republic of Abkhazia to Syria Bagrat Khutaba, assistant to ambassador Kuteiba Fom Hasan and the embassy's adviser on work with diaspora Zhanbu Abaza Agrba.

According to Bagrat Khutaba, the approximate number of observers is about 200 people, 3-4 people at each site. Observers from Abkhazia are assigned to three polling stations. Three candidates are running for the post of head of state: incumbent President Bashar al-Assad, former Minister of State Abdullah Sallum Abdullah, and patriotic opposition spokesman Mahmoud Ahmed Murai, who leads the Syrian Democratic Front (SDF).

The previous presidential elections in Syria were held in 2014 on an alternative basis. 73.5% of Syrian citizens took part in the voting. The leader of the Arab Socialist Renaissance Party, Bashar al-Assad, won the elections receiving the support of 88.7% of voters.
